Unlike private hospitals, VA hospitals apparently are held to lower cleanliness standards than regulations would otherwise allow in a private sector facility. Concerned employees at an Illinois VA hospital blew the whistle on the cover up of a cockroach infestation at the hospital, including kitchen areas where patient meals are prepared.
According to the investigation report released yesterday: "roaches routinely crawl across kitchen countertops and have ended up in veterans' food." Despite the infestation, nothing was done because according to the VA, it was "not very severe."
