I saw this story in today's newspaper and I was touched. It says something very good about our military that over 70 years after the death of this sailor shortly after D-Day, we still make efforts to recover and identify those who died for our country. In our nationwide practice representing veterans and military families we are often frustrated dealing with the various government agencies. Just last week, I wrote a letter to the VA imploring it to settle an FTCA case for a dying veteran. It would give him great peace to know his widow was taken care of. I asked the VA lawyer to "do the right thing." I have not heard from her. However, in the instance of this Nebraska sailor killed many years ago, the government has, in fact, "done the right thing." And that is good.
