A psychologist at an Air Force base in California was charged this week with multiple counts of sexual assault on his patients.
The charges against Dr. Heath J. Sommer stem from allegations that he abused his patients while they were under his care for PTSD treatment at Travis Air Force Base’s David Grant Medical Center near Sacramento.
The patients were themselves already victims of prior sexual assault at the time they were targeted by Sommer.
The assaults at issue were alleged to have occurred in 2014 and 2015, and the Air Force hospital suspended Sommer in 2016 after he reportedly had met with more than 100 patients.
Notably, the Pentagon released a report just last month noting a 10 percent increase in reported sexual assaults in the military over the last year.
